| The Early Childhood Education Resource Library in Lecompton has several new materials of interest to early childhood professionals. A series of video tapes examines prominent theories of early development and their practical applications. "Play, A Vygotskian Approach" reviews the traditional ways of studying play, the Freudian-Eriksonian point of view, the Piagetian perspective and Lev Vygotsky's ideas. "Growing Minds: Cognitive Development in Early Childhood" examines the work of Lev Vygotsky and Jean Piaget, illuminating the similarities and differences of their contributions to our understanding of the cognitive development of young children. "Scaffolding Self Directed Learning in the Primary Grades" blends philosophies of whole group learning and discovery learning to provide examples of how learning can be scaffolded so children are active learners while teachers use their superior knowledge base to meaningfully guide learning. "Concrete Operations" explores a child's movement from pre-operational to concrete operational stage of cognitive development, paying particular attention to children's construction of the unit concept, a basic for arithmetic and beginning reading. "Using What We Know: Applying Piaget's Developmental Theory in Primary Classrooms" explores Piaget's theories, and shows examples filmed in public school classrooms explaining how to set up a physical and organizational environment, make curriculum decisions and assess child growth.
