News from Head Start Collaboration Grant

The first interactive video training (ITV) between Head Start and Child Care occurred on February 8 and 15 at nine sites across Kansas. More than 150 people attended the class taught by Dr. Barbara Thompson, early childhood special education professor at the University of Kansas, on Creating an Emotionally Safe Environment. The class provided teamwork and presented similarities between Child Care and Head Start. The first Child Care CEU's in Kansas were awarded to all of the participants.

After receiving the positive comments about the training and the interest in other classes, the Head Start Collaboration Team decided to sponsor a series of classes next year that would provide training to both Head Start and Child Care. Special effort will be given to inviting home care providers.

The Collaboration team also sponsored a Forum on Welfare Reform in the State of Kansas on March 19, 1997. School districts, Head Start, health departments, SRS, child care providers, and others interested were invited to attend. Representatives from the Federal government, the Departments of SRS, Education, and Health and Environment spoke on the changes in their programs with the adoption of Welfare Reform. Speakers addressed the following topics: Federal Block Grants, Child Care, TANF, Immigration, Medicaid, Child Support Enforcement, SSI, Food, Child Nutrition and Education.

The Kansas Head Start Association completed its final steps to becoming an official organization on March 13 and 14, 1997. The Board was elected from the four groups in attendance: Head Start parents, staff, directors and friends.

Head Start will be holding their Regional Conference from April 29-May 1, 1997 at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri. The theme for this conference is Head Start: Changing Times, Changing Strategies. This conference will have three tracks: the Revised Head Start Performance Standards, Parent Leadership, and Early Head Start.
